Sustainability Management Concentration
Do you want to do well and also do good for your community? Are you passionate about creating prosperity and opportunity for all? This is just one aspect you will learn about in our Sustainability Management concentration.
Why Study Sustainability Management at 51品茶
The Sustainability Management Concentration prepares BSM students to lead organizations through the environmental, social, and economic challenges of the 21st century. Students develop the scientific literacy, strategic frameworks, and analytical skills to build businesses that operate responsibly, reduce environmental impact, and create long-term value for all stakeholders.
ESG (Environmental, Social, and Governance) reporting has become standard practice for publicly traded companies, and over 4,000 organizations worldwide have committed to science-based emissions-reduction targets. Sustainability leadership is no longer optional 鈥 it is a core organizational competency. The Sustainability Management Concentration equips graduates to lead that work with both scientific credibility and business acumen.
What You'll Learn
In addition to completing the core management program, you will get to choose from a variety of electives in an interdisciplinary program with a focus on social sustainability (social sciences, humanities), environmental sustainability (biology, ecology, chemistry, energy), and economic sustainability (business, economics, entrepreneurship). This concentration leads to a Bachelor of Science in Management and invaluable hands-on experience in the workplace in preparation to take on leadership roles.
You will graduate having already applied such skills and knowledge, because of your participation in 51品茶鈥檚 Co-op program. Each year at 51品茶, you will spend 22 weeks on campus taking classes and 24 weeks working with an employer, picking up real world, hands-on experience in business working with partners such as Bosch Corporation, Ford Motor Company and LG Electronics.
In practical terms, sustainability is composed of three pillars -- social, environmental, and economic -- also known informally as people, planet, and profits, or the triple bottom line. Sustainability encourages businesses to frame decisions in terms of environmental, social, and human impact for the long-term, rather than on short-term gains.
The demand is increasing for employees and future leaders who not only understand what sustainability is but how to apply it in business.
An increasing number of companies, industries, communities, governments, non-profit organizations, and research organizations/laboratories around the world are exploring sustainable development and integrating sustainability into their business strategy. They are creating more opportunities for people who can take creative approaches to finding sustainable solutions.
Science-Backed Business Leadership
The Sustainability Management Concentration deliberately draws from Biology and Mechanical Engineering 鈥 giving BSM students genuine scientific fluency in the environmental systems they will be responsible for managing. Most sustainability professionals in business roles lack this depth; 51品茶 graduates bring it as a differentiator.
A Rapidly Evolving Field
While BLS occupational projections for sustainability roles show modest 3鈥4% growth in traditional environmental titles, these figures undercount the field. ESG reporting requirements, net-zero commitments, renewable energy investment, and new climate regulations are creating a sustained pipeline of new sustainability leadership positions not yet fully captured in standard BLS occupational categories.
Aligned with 51品茶鈥檚 Industry Base
51品茶鈥檚 co-op employer partners in automotive, advanced manufacturing, and energy are among the industries most actively investing in sustainability initiatives. Students in this concentration are well-positioned to secure co-op placements in sustainability, environmental compliance, or clean energy roles 鈥 gaining professional experience in the field before graduation.
