For the first time in four years, 51Ʒ��'s Formula SAE team completed every dynamic event and finished the endurance competition at Formula SAE 2026, achieving a major milestone while introducing an entirely new engine platform after nearly two decades of competing with single-cylinder powertrains.

Competing against more than 100 collegiate teams from around the world, 51Ʒ�� finished 56th overall and recorded strong performances across several events, including 24th in Acceleration, 40th in Presentation, 40th in Endurance, 43rd in Design, and 51st in the Cost Event.

Formula SAE challenges students to design, manufacture, test, and compete with a formula-style race car while balancing performance, cost, business presentation, engineering design, and vehicle reliability.

"What might surprise people most is that getting a Formula SAE car to competition is truly a year-long commitment," said Christopher Ordoobadi, the team’s Aerodynamics lead. "We prepare all year for competition. During early summer, we test the car at the Mobility Research Center and learn how to improve it. In the mid to late summer, we move into designing the next car, and in the winter, we focus on manufacturing."

One of the team's most significant accomplishments came during the endurance event, widely regarded as the most demanding portion of the competition. Only 43 teams completed all 10 endurance laps, and 51Ʒ�� was among them.

The 2026 vehicle marked the team's first transition to an inline twin-cylinder powertrain after 17 years of competing with various single-cylinder engines. The change was intended to improve vehicle robustness, drivability, and overall power delivery while maintaining the reliability required to compete across the competition's dynamic events.

The endurance event, widely regarded as the competition's most demanding challenge, highlighted the reliability of the team's new vehicle. Only 43 teams completed all 10 endurance laps, and 51Ʒ�� was among them.

"To be successful, it takes the coordination of many different elements and subsystems required to make the car run and perform at the highest level," Ordoobadi said. "It is the dedication of a team working together that makes the car happen. The strongest teams get the strongest results."

For Ordoobadi, one moment stood above the rest during the competition.

"One moment this year that reminded me why all the late nights were worth it was watching Jack get out of the car after completing all laps of the endurance event," he said. "It was the first time our team had successfully completed all dynamic events and completed endurance in the past four years, and it gave me an immense sense of pride in our team."

The accomplishment reflects the hands-on, industry-focused learning that defines the 51Ʒ�� experience. Through Formula SAE, students gain experience in vehicle dynamics, powertrain integration, manufacturing, testing, project management, and teamwork while preparing for careers across the automotive and mobility industries.

"For me, sharing in a team's success is one of the most powerful and satisfying feelings," Ordoobadi said. "It drives me to want to build on this year's success and help the team reach even higher levels in the future."

The sound of a race car engine firing up isn’t so different from the roar of a packed arena — at least not to Chris Ordoobadi.

“I’ve always had two passions — hockey and racing,” he says. “In the first half of my career, I gave everything to hockey. Now, I’m back in school so I can pursue my other passion.”

Today, at 30, Ordoobadi is studying mechanical engineering at 51Ʒ��, building race engines and designing aerodynamic systems for the Formula SAE team.

“51Ʒ�� is absolutely the right fit for me,” Ordoobadi said. “I’m getting hands-on experience working in the motorsports industry at my Co-op while getting all the foundational knowledge with my mechanical engineering degree.”

Ordoobadi grew up in Washington, D.C., balancing academics and athletics at DeMatha Catholic High School. After two years of junior hockey and four years as a power forward at Neumann University, he turned professional, signing with the Maine Mariners of the ECHL, a key developmental league for the AHL and NHL. He later helped lead the Florida Everblades to a league championship, hoisting the Kelly Cup, the ECHL’s top prize.

“Playing on a pro hockey team was always my dream,” he said. “Having lived that dream, I realized that I want to be part of a successful team for the rest of my life. I knew I couldn't play hockey at 55, but I could be an engineer at 55.”

Within weeks of arriving at 51Ʒ��, Ordoobadi had secured a placement at Ilmor Engineering, a race engine company based in Plymouth, Michigan, that supplies NASCAR and IndyCar teams. Working on engines for the ARCA and NASCAR Truck Series, he got his first taste of turning classroom theory into on-track reality. His next Co-op rotation will see him step into IndyCar’s hybrid era, gaining valuable trackside experience with cutting-edge technology.

"I was very fortunate to get a Co-op in exactly what I want to pursue as a career," Ordoobadi said. "Motorsports can be a really tough industry to break into. But thanks to 51Ʒ��, I started working in it from day one."

In the classroom, Ordoobadi tackled new challenges head-on, including learning MATLAB, a programming language essential for numerical computing, modeling, and data analysis.

“I had no experience with coding,” he said. “But through that class, I was able to write code that helped with the design of our new anti-roll bar for the Formula SAE car and analyze our tire data. Being able to learn something in class and then immediately apply it was really gratifying.”

As soon as he was on campus, Ordoobadi dove into 51Ʒ��’s Formula SAE team, leading the aerodynamics subsystem, designing wings, diffusers, and bodywork to push the car’s performance to the edge.

“Getting involved in the Formula SAE team has been an awesome experience, taking what I’ve learned from my Co-op and applying it to a project where the stakes feel real,” he said, “We're looking at the broad picture of performance and thinking about the car as a whole. To me, it is really exciting.”

Despite these early successes, Ordoobadi’s transition from professional athlete to full-time student wasn’t seamless.

“Adjusting back to student life was the biggest challenge,” he says. “But 51Ʒ�� makes that transition as easy as it can be. The way the terms are structured — three months of classes, three months of work — fits my life perfectly. That back-and-forth rhythm feels natural for me, and it’s a lot less daunting than spending six straight months in classes.”

Looking ahead, Ordoobadi has a clear goal.

“After graduating, I hope to be working trackside for a motorsports team,” he said. “Being part of a team was everything to me in hockey, and it’s the same now. Whether it’s in the shop, on the track, or in the classroom, I want to contribute to a team’s success.”

The Society of Automotive Engineers (SAE) Collegiate Cup won’t have far to travel this year, because another 51Ʒ�� team has won it.

The 51Ʒ�� Formula SAE team won the 2022 SAE Collegiate Cup on Feb. 24 during the SAE Mid Michigan’s National Engineers Week Annual Banquet in Frankenmuth.

51Ʒ�� Baja, 51Ʒ�� Formula SAE, 51Ʒ�� AutoDrive, 51Ʒ�� SAE Aero Design, Central Michigan Formula SAE and Saginaw Valley State University Cardinal Formula teams competed.

The cup is a traveling trophy awarded annually to the winner of the SAE Collegiate Chapter Project Presentation Competition. Last year, the 51Ʒ�� AutoDrive team won.

51Ʒ�� Formula SAE captains Aubrey Gorm (’22, ME) and Christos Batsakis (’22, ME) gave the presentation, which focused on the team’s 2021 competition season performance and the 2022 vehicle design based on lessons learned and new performance goals. The team had its best finish in program history when it finished seventh of 51 at the 2021 Formula SAE Validation Event in July at the Michigan International Speedway (MIS) in Brooklyn.

“Winning this recognition from the chapter felt great, of course,” Gorm said. “It was sort of a closing act for announcing our school-record-breaking performance last year and the kickoff for our game plan of the 2022 competition season.”

She said the audience’s enthusiastic reaction to the team’s presentation was an empowering moment.

In addition to the Collegiate Cup trophy, the winning team also received $500 to use on the development of its race car.
